Restore Knee Stability. Reclaim Your Active Life.

An injury to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the most common and significant knee problems, especially in athletes and physically active individuals. This ligament plays a key role in stabilizing the knee during movements such as running, pivoting, jumping, and landing. When torn, it can lead to instability, loss of function, and an increased risk of further joint damage if not properly treated.
At Kamakshi Orthopedics, located in Chaitanyapuri, Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad, we specialize in minimally invasive ACL reconstruction surgery using arthroscopic techniques. Led by Dr. Ashwin Reddy, our team provides comprehensive care that helps patients recover quickly, safely, and return to an active lifestyle with renewed confidence.

Understanding ACL Injuries

The ACL is one of four main ligaments in the knee that connect the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone). It prevents the knee from sliding forward excessively and provides rotational stability. ACL tears typically occur due to sudden stops, sharp turns, or direct trauma to the knee. These are common in sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, and skiing.
Common signs of an ACL tear include a popping sound at the time of injury, rapid swelling, intense pain, and a feeling of the knee “giving way” during movement. Many people also experience difficulty walking, decreased range of motion, and an inability to continue physical activity immediately after the injury.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

At Kamakshi Orthopedics, we start with a detailed clinical examination to assess joint stability and range of motion. Our team then confirms the diagnosis with imaging tests like MRI to clearly visualize the torn ligament and check for any associated damage, such as meniscus tears or cartilage injuries. X-rays may also be used to rule out fractures or other bone-related issues.

Surgical Approach

ACL reconstruction is recommended when the ligament is completely torn, or if the patient experiences knee instability that limits their lifestyle or sports performance. Our surgeons perform arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, a minimally invasive technique using small incisions and a camera to guide surgical tools inside the knee.
We typically use a tendon graft—either from the patient’s own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft)—to replace the damaged ACL. This graft is positioned precisely to mimic the original ligament’s function and fixed securely in place using screws or special devices. The procedure is done under anesthesia and usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovery begins the same day or next day with guided movement and physiotherapy. Our in-house rehabilitation experts work closely with each patient to create a phased recovery plan that focuses on pain control, mobility, strength, and joint stability. The timeline for full recovery varies based on individual progress, but most patients can expect the following:
Adherence to the rehabilitation plan is crucial to regain full knee function and prevent reinjury.
